When did you first learn about the gays? Long long ago, when I
was a wee lass, I was being raised by a very theatrical set of
parents (who apparently never informed me that I'm not actually
Irish, and therefore will always sound awkward when using the
phrase "wee lass"). They were so theatrical, in fact, that my
mother insisted on playing obscure Sondheim musicals in the
background of my allotted Sesame Street time, while my father
performed with our local theater group. Naturally, the cast parties
were usually held at our house. One day, I asked my mother the
ultimate question: "Mommy, Frank and Debra are always together,
and they say they love each other. Why aren't they married?"
"Well," she explained, "Frank doesn't want to marry a woman.
Sometimes men want to be with other men" as she proceeded to
make examples the rolodex of gay male couples who frequented
our house for cast parties and our legendary Tonys parties. One
would expect a child to have a few questions about this new
"birds-and-the-bees" (or in this case, "bees-and-the-bees?")
information. I only had one: "But mommy, if men are supposed to
be with men, why is daddy married to you??"
